Civilization in Lord of the Flies

Civilization in Lord of the Flies is a mask for human nature. Civilization disallows us from displaying our true nature, which is certainly seen in a negative light on the island. Since the conflict is not simply one of survival, what is human nature, and how does it pertain to civilization? Piggy says that 'they're all dead", alluding to a nuclear war that brings about the death of civilization.

In the beginning, the boys arrive on the civilization and immediately try to reenact the societal rules they were accustomed to in England. They use the conch, which symbolizes civilization, and more specifically democracy and order. They try to establish rules which will keep the civilization alive.
